LIBERATION IS EDUCATIONAL FREEDOM!

Join us for three days centered on reclaiming mindfulness, joy, and the power of intentional collective action. This year’s theme is “Reclaiming Education Through Liberation” and will focus on sharing tools, practices, and policies to dismantle and uproot systems of oppression within education.

This is not a “sit and get conference”! You will work, commune and walk away with tools, ideas, and a new network of folx to help you move forward on your journey of reclaiming education through liberation. You’ll also the opportunity to extend your learning beyond the Convening throughout the year with the Network for EdWork!

Dr Bettina Love

 

Dr. Bettina Love is a nationally respected abolitionist educator and a powerful advocate for education reform. She is a co-founder of Abolitionist Teaching Network, a Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellow at Harvard University, and the Athletic Association Endowed Professor at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Love is the renowned author of We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom and Hip Hop’s Li’l Sistas Speak: Negotiating Hip Hop Identities and Politics in the New South

Our Framework: Liberation Pedagogy

Liberation Pedagogy is an approach to teaching, leading, and facilitating that asks all participants to use self-reflection and vulnerability to recognize and intentionally unlearn and undo white supremacist cultural norms. These norms subtly invade our behaviors (verbal, body language, and psychological state) but can have cumulative and colossal impact in upholding White supremacist culture.

Liberation Pedagogy also offers tools to replace those behaviors with more inclusive ones that are culturally affirming and sustaining for all. This is the ideal we constantly work towards and it is challenging work, particularly when alone or in isolation. But when we continually reflect and engage with decolonizing pedagogies and act in community with others, we create collective stamina and energy. Plainly speaking, being liberated is consistently and actively confronting our complicity in maintaining white supremacy.

The Convening 3-day Overview

Friday, Feb. 18th

Saturday, Feb. 19th

During each session block, registrants can choose between programming for leaders, teachers or combined settings.

Session Topics Include:

Identity Work & Self-Care (Heartwork)

The key to retaining educators and leaders of color is helping them navigate the challenges and celebrate success along the way. The Convening will prioritize healing and the undoing of internalized and environmental oppression by regularly incorporating heartwork—care, flexibility, and celebration—into programming. Convening sessions aimed at supporting this will include:

  • Introduction to The Racial Justice Personas: Claiming your role in the journey to racial justice and equity
  • Decolonizing the system and the mind
  • Holistic health practices that sustain educators and leaders as they disrupt systems

Disruption & Dismantling Oppression (Headwork)

We know that continual knowledge building is important, and, that as people of color, the Network for EdWork’s (NWEW) community of participants need and bring transformative knowledge and skill development in order to sustain their work and remain in education. Convening sessions to engage in this work will include:

  • Storytelling as disruption to racism
  • Addressing the inadequate and harmful banking model of education
  • Disrupting racism within educational institutions

Liberatory Education & Practices (Community)

Connecting and communing for sharing, encouragement, support, informal mentorship, and networking is foundational to most cultures. Establishing and cultivating community is essential to the success of our programming and increasing the diversity of the educator workforce in Washington. Convening sessions that drive at this will include:

  • Teaching and leading that liberates
  • Equity and community centered mentoring as a tool for liberation
  • Amplifying voices and creating space in the classroom and school community
